Doctor - Chicken Pox Counting
Students roll the dice and add that many chicken pox to the face. Then they write the number in the box.
Fireman - Shape Firetruck
Students cut out a square, rectangle, and circles and use them to make a fire truck. Then they add the finishing touches like a hose, ladder, and siren.
Where's the Fireman?
Hide the fireman under a fire truck. Have the students take turns guessing a number until they find the fireman.
When I Grow Up
Students draw a picture of what they want to be when they grow up. I do this as my culmination for the unit.
Police Man - License Plate Game
This game is a little complicated, but my students love it. First, you need to make a license plate that resembles your state license plate and photocopy it a lot (I photocopied mine in black and white and then colored them to save on ink). Take some of the license plates and glue letters on them (choose whatever letters you are currently working on) and laminate. (You will need one license plate per kid in class, unless you want to repeat a few licence plates, which wouldn't be a bad idea. If your students know any sight words, then I would put sight words on the license plate to add a reading and spelling component to the game. My students don't know any sight words, so I just did random letters).Take four of the license plates and laminate them blank, without any letters. Then di-cut and laminate four sets of letters (one of each of the letters you glued on the license plates). I split my class into four groups. Each group got a blank license plate and a set of letters. Then the students take turns coming to the front to be the "police man." I have a bike, police man hat and jacket that they can wear if they want. I put the laminated license plate with letters/sight words on the back of the police man. Then he rides around the class in a circle. The students must look at the letters on his license plate and copy it on their license plate. We repeat the game until everyone has a turn being the police man.
Doctor - X Ray
I got this idea from Montessori Learning Center here.
Doctor - Dr. Bag
I saw these doctor bags on Pinterest, but I I wanted to make them a little more educational by making my students count out their supplies. I brainstormed a bunch of different ideas, and this is what I came up with.
Doctor - Band-aid Bunnies
This activity goes along with the book My Friend and I by Lisa Jahn-Clough. In the story, two friends fight over a stuffed animal bunny and accidentally rip the ears off. Then they use band aids to stick the ears back on. The only thing that relates to doctors are the band aids, but the students loved the story and activity.
Make Mailboxes
My Community Helper Unit is in February, which is perfect because of Valentine's Day. My students make mailboxes and then pass out their valentines like real mail carriers. Last year, I bought mailboxes on clearnace at Oriental Trading Company, but they were WAY to small to fit even a few valentines, so this year I'm going to try something else, I'll let you know how it goes.
Baker - Decorate Cookies
We decorated cookies. It was messy and crazy, but so much fun. At the beginning of the day, I let each student cut out two shapes in the cookie dough using cookie cutters. Then we baked them and decorated them at the end of the day.
Baker - Make a Baker
Students make a baker and draw pictures of their favorite food.
Cookie Jar Playdough Mats
Students make playdough cookies and count them to fill the cookie jars.
Community Helper Intro
I have a picture of each community helper. I pull them out of a bag one at a time and we discuss as a group who this person is, what they do to help us, and what tools they use. Then each student chooses their favorite community helper and creates a picture of them by using ripped construction paper and colored pencils.
